Sara Black

Sara Black (real name Sarah Owusu-Ansah), an artist born in Accra, Ghana, currently lives and works in Karlsruhe, Germany. With a bachelor's degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and postgraduate studies at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, she has developed an artistic practice deeply rooted in personal experiences and social themes.

Sara Black's works are influenced by her fascination with science fiction, dreams, and alternative realities. For her, art has always been a means of processing difficult times and depression. Her close bond with her father, who was also an artist, has particularly shaped her creative work and artistic identity.

Through powerful oil paintings, often created on unconventional materials such as wood, her works transcend the boundaries of the traditional canvas. Her intuitive and experimental approach is also evident in series like Misfits, in which she challenges societal norms and explores personal identities.

“A fundamental part of my creative process is collecting seemingly useless, discarded materials from the streets, which I use as surfaces for my paintings. Although I primarily work with oil, my artistic practice is highly experimental. During my residency, I not only want to focus on my own creative work but also engage with the local community and contribute to the broader cultural scene. I believe that art has the power to break down barriers, unite diverse voices, and bring beauty and inspiration into people’s lives.” Sara Black
