Amanei Johnson

In her paintings, American artist Amanei Johnson explores the history and lifestyle of her homeland – a country she loves but also views critically. As she travels across the vast continent, she gathers her impressions from conversations, facial expressions, and observations in sketches, which she later transforms into paintings.

Repetition becomes a ritual. Motifs return like memories one cannot outgrow. Beneath the bold surface of Americana – ambition, excess, curated identity – smaller gestures whisper of inner life: survival, doubt, faith.

“These paintings do not resolve the contradiction between love for a homeland and questioning it. They are right in the middle of it. They trace how culture shapes the psyche, how individuality flickers within systems created to contain it.” Amanei Johnson
